LO2 - P3 | Concepts and ideas
Animation brief:
Create a children's animation that is aimed at 15 to 18 year-olds. The animation will be created to appeal to the explorer psychometric profile.
Name ideas
- Quentin (name of cat)
- Loss
- The Doors
- Grief
- 5 Until
Chosen name: 5 Until
After brainstorming ideas for a simplistic and fitting name for my animation, I decided to choose "5 Until" as it provides a brief introduction to what the animation is about: it also leaves the audience questioning what these 5 'things' may be, which can only be discovered by watching the animation. It also works as a teaser for the end of the film: '5' stages 'until' what? What will happen after those 5 stages?
Mindmap:
The mindmap above provides an insight on my 2 original ideas for a short animation. To help me choose between them, I analysed both ideas and assessed how I would come to produce both of them, what the plot would be, what characters will there be, colour scheme, etc.
Both ideas entail themes of mental health issues and psychological aspects. Because I want my animation to leave viewers with a positive attitude and with some lesson learnt, I decided to choose the idea that goes through the 5 stages of grief, as it is more common than paranoia and a lot of people will or have experienced the 5 stages of grief.
Concept 1: Paranoia -
This was my initial idea for my animation. This idea tells the story of the protagonist clearly experiencing symptoms of paranoia. To further emphasize their paranoia, they will be shown wearing a blindfold, having sensitive hearing and other strong senses. At the start, they will be shown as oblivious, showing obvious signs of fear and bravery and even grabbing a bat at some point as self defence and for a sense of security.
Eventually, the animation will reveal that the protagonist was, in fact, being watched by what seems to be a tall shadowy figure with many watchful eyes. Soon after, the protagonist finds the demon and finds themselves in a deep state of fear and paranoia. The tall shadowy fear comes forward but instead of attacking, it gifts the protagonist flowers as a way to show that it is not harmful.
Overall, the message of this animation was to show that paranoia is a normal feeling and apart of the human experience, and that help is available for those who have frequent feelings of paranoia.
Concept 2: 5 stages of grief -
5 stages of grief, my chosen animation idea, will tell the story about a young person called Vivian, whose pet cat (Quentin) had very recently passed away. Because of the deep bond they had, Vivian is having trouble processing the death of Quentin, and is going through personified versions of the 5 stages of grief.
Each stage begins with Vivian walking through a door with the stage labelled clearly on the door. Once Vivian walks through, she will find herself in a new environment each time that has links to the stage she is going through, for example, denial will be a courtroom, anger will be a death metal concert etc.
The aim is to have Vivian get through all these stages and finally find a way to be happy again having gone through all 5 stages of grief.
Demo:
This 2 second clip is a brief demo of the animation to help me become familiar with the available tools on Adobe Animate and to help me practice the style of art and animation I would like to create. In total, this animation took around 2 to 3 hours to produce: this is because I had sketched out a pose before importing it into Animate and there is a lot of redrawn frames in this short clip (a lot of natural hair movement caused by wind). Because of this, I plan not to solely rely on frames to make my animation stand out, but rather I will try focussing on the colour scheme and style to catch the audience's attention.
